I have begun to believe my mind is full of tiny little topics that act like pimples.

No one can predict the order they start to fester in, or when they’ll get ripe and burst.

LIAR! LIAR! PANTS ON FIRE!

Abbotsford Councillor Henry Braun is a Liar!
I’m Calling Him Out on It!

My E-mail to Abbotsford Council --Sept. 18, 2014

Dear Mayor Banman and Councillors:

While I would like to request that all Council members read this, it is specifically addressed to Councillor Henry Braun for what I believe is an outright lie regarding the safety hazards related to the growth of Medical Marijuana.

Councillor Braun:

This morning I read your statement as reported in the Cannabis Digest on Tuesday Sept 16, 2014 that the privacy policy of Health Canada in failing to disclose the location of Federally Licensed Medical Marijuana grow-ops is costing the City of Abbotsford and its residents “horrendous expense”.
You want all BC Municipalities to demand a change to over-rule the privacy right

You state as a matter of fact “the city has had multiple instances of homebuyers unknowingly purchasing former grow-op locations — leaving them with costly repair bills to fix tampered electrical wires and mould issues.

You sir are a LIAR!

You state two “Facts” that are either outright lies or a monstrous distortion of a minor isolated occasional problem.

I want to know what your city data base has on record to support your outrageous statements. I would like a reply from you and answers to a couple of very simple questions.

If you are telling the truth then you should be able to easily answer with a simple search of city records and come with the following clarifications:

  1. What was the “horrendous” expense to the City in Fiscal 2013?
  2. What is the “horrendous” expense” so far in 2014”
  3. How many “Multiple instances” were reported in 2013?
  4. How many “Multiple instances” were reported in 2014?

You state: “Somebody buys a house and they basically have to gut the inside of it. You’re talking $50,000”!

  1. How many multiple instance had “tampered electrical wires”?
  2. What was the average cost to repair?
  3. How many multiple instance had “mould issues”?
  4. What was the average cost to repair?
I will wait for your reply

To all you other Councillors:

As I see it Henry spoke for the Council and if he really did, you’re all as stupid and bigoted as him. Take a good look at Henry’s answers and make your own assessment of what is truth!

Best regards:

The CMA Response to My Criticism

I Offended The CMA
They Requested I Shut Up!

Bonus: Today I got a letter in response to my recent critcism of Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti. He’s too damned uppity to respond himself so he had his hired help write me. LOL

Dear Mr. Barrett

I am writing to you in my capacity as CMA’s Senior Legal Counsel in regards to your most recent correspondence to the CMA President, Dr. L.H. Francescutti on the subject of medical marijuana.

While individuals are certainly entitled to differences on opinion on such subject matters, we wish to underline that some of your statements are not appropriate nor professional. Do not direct future statements of this nature to the CMA and its elected representatives. Please govern yourself accordingly.

Yours
Jean Nelson
                           <><><><><><><><><><>                                 My Reply

Dear Ms. Nelson:

Thank you for your contact if for no other reason than it’s an acknowledgement that Dr. Lou is finally reading my submissions. You might ask him to see my previous ones which were, at the start, very appropriate and professional- No response. The fact that the fool decided to out me on his ignore list prompted this one you object to. My comments are all appropriate when directed at and about Dr. Lou. They are presented in a professional manner that matches that of your lord and master and I actually resent having to lower my standards to match his in order to establish a contact.

You are CMA’s Senior Legal Counsel and obviously have to be familiar with the provisions both the MMAR and the MMRP. Why are you letting Dr. Lou get away with his continual repetition of his lie that the document doctor’s have to sign is a “prescription”? That is an outright lie and you know it.

The Letter now required by the MMRP effectively is the same MMAR Declaration confirming the symptoms qualifying an individual for a legal right to buy pot. The only change with the MMRP is the restriction of that right to purchase from only one vendor from their approved list. What Doctors sign is not a prescription but a permit to buy and the Gateway function signing will create is just Bull!

You are allowing the fool to present the CMA as a collection of cowards in denial of the benefits of Marijuana because they all fear loss of income and will lose big kickbacks and fringe benefits that Big Pharma has used to buy their loyalty and “Prescribing” drugs one hell of a lot more dangerous than pot. For heavens sake, Dr. Francescutti should be far more concerned with his followers actually killing patients with their over-prescribing of Big Pharma opiates and other drugs with fatal consequences.

I should point out that I have no need to slice up Dr. Lou’s most recent outpouring of anguish over the harassment and approach of the sales professionals for marijuana who copy the tactics of Big Pharma sales professionals promoting their poisons.

I have no need to blow his presentation all to hell because that has already effectively been done by a Teenager who before he even enters university has the ability to recognize bullshit for what it is. You might want to send him a “Shut Your Mouth” letter like you did me. Check it out, you can read it in the True North Times at http://www.truenorthtimes.ca/2014/07/26/canadian-doctors-considering-medical-marijuana/#.U9WOtm2RaK0.facebook

I have no intention of curbing my criticism of Dr. Lou when he advocates that his Physicians violate their Oath “Do no harm” and refuse to sign for a patient in pain and are content to sit back and wait for their victim to die. This asshole has caused more harm to the Medical Marijuana patient pool than any of his predecessors. There are 40,000 of them declaring they benefit from using cannabis for manifold diseases and conditions and Dr. Lou stands on his podium declaring it has “No Medical Benefit”, that there has been no valid research despite thousands of published technically valid studies, that there is great risk in its use despite 5000 years of medical and recreational use. He closes his eyes and refuses to see the benefits that changed Dr. Sanjay Gupta from an opponent into an advocate for its use. I don’t understand how he could have missed the “Weed” documentary with its national exposure a half dozen times on various networks. I believe he is fully aware of his intentional denial of benefit but he has painted himself into a corner where he simply cannot declare himself a liar.

As far as your order “Do not direct future statements of this nature to the CMA and its elected representatives.” You can shove it where the sun don’t shine!
I intent to continue to challenge the stupidity and dishonorable conduct of both Dr. Lou and his followers in the CMA, with regard to Medical Marijuana. As long as they persist with their denial of help to me and my 40,000 fellow companions now being persecuted, I will do so using any language appropriate to the situation, witha level of professionalism suitable to that of my target.

I do not know if you believe you have any legal recourse to make me hold my tongue and I don’t really give a damn if you do. Go ahead and sue me. I can’t even afford my own medication because of CMA’s opposition. Go ahead and get me arrested and thrown in the clink. I don’t give a shit if you do. That would be an increase in my standard of living: free rent, free meals, a new circle of friends for me, and a welcome holiday for my wife.

Feel free to do anything you want. I’m not afraid of Harper, the Cops and not you. Anything you do to silence me will simply elevate my podium and public visibility to a higher level. I need all the publicity I can get

At one point in my life long past I actually believed that a Doctor was a man of Character and held the profession in high regard. Unfortunately Dr. Lou and the profession have demonstrated a complete lack of ”The Six Pillars of Character” the ethical qualities that earned my regard: .

Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship.

Among these Pillars, “Honesty” is the most important component of each. The battery of lies regarding Cannabis that the CMA is spouting under D. Lou’s leadership, have destroyed all Six Pillars and the image the public is getting from their attitude is that of a bunch of moral derelicts.

I have already published this reply completely on my blog at:

Chew on that. I look forward to your response

Post #132- A CULTURE OF DEFIANCE

A CULTURE OF DEFIANCE:
History of the Reform-Conservative Party of Canada
By
Emily Dee
from her blog

Aberhart and Harper on Crusade

At

NOPE!
Introduction:
I ran across this article while surfing the other day and I was compelled to publish it here for you, my audience. It was written back in 2010 and was an astute warning of the evil to come.  Nobody listened and evil struck the election Harpo gained his majority  and here we are with stupid on his throne. This was a forewarning of the predictive powers of his speech to the Council for National Policy back in 2010 and it is revelatory. Ms. Dee shares my contempt for Harper and her commentary on that speech is one I wish I had written. I wanted to present this prediction because it has been 4 years since it was made and everything she warns us of has been coming true.
I also wanted to publish this to educate all the younger people who are really fed up with Fearless Leader why he is the monster he is. All of you people 30 and under have only paid attention to Harpo and witnessed his flaws for the past 9 years. How much attention did you pay to politics as a teenager? I and Ms. Dee have known of his shortcomings for the past twenty year and we have both watched with contempt as he has slithered up the Political Totem Pole. What follows is a lesson in in political history from a different perspective. Ms. Dee was cynical in 2010 when she wrote this article and concluded it with the statement .
“It's frightening really, but it shows what happens when you don't pay attention.”
I wonder what she would say today
To begin:
A CULTURE OF DEFIANCE:
History of the Reform-Conservative Party of Canada
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

In 1997, Stephen Joseph Harper, our current, at least current to my writing this, Prime Minister; was asked to give a speech on the Canadian political system, to the Council for National Policy, a secretive American lobby group, who were meeting in Montreal. CNP is an influential right-wing organization founded by Tim LaHaye and James Dobson, and in many ways is the military arm of the Religious Right in the
United States.

Tim Lahaye is the co-author, along with Jerry B. Jenkins, of an enormously successful series of books, called Left Behind. These books have formed the foundation of Christians United for Israel, a religious group pushing for the annihilation of Muslims in the
Middle East, as a step on their road to Armageddon. CUFI's founder John Hagee, calls it "God's Foreign Policy".

Their Canadian head is Charles McVety, a man who has a lot of clout with our current government and enjoys not only ready access to people like Jason Kenney (Immigration), Stockwell Day (Treasury) and Jim Flaherty (Finance), but also Stephen Harper himself.

James Dobson is the founder of Focus on the Family, an anti-abortion, anti-gay rights, anti-public school, organization; that includes several of Harper's MPs; like Maurice Vellacott, Rob Anders, and Brad Trost. The Canadian founder of Focus on the Family, Darrel Reid, is now Harper's deputy chief of staff.

Dobson assisted in Harper's political success by running a series of radio ads in Canadian cities against same-sex marriage; an issue that Harper then adopted as part of his reaching out to the social conservatives.

When that 1997 speech first surfaced during the 2005-2006 federal election, it raised a lot of red flags, once again adding fuel to the fear of Stephen Harper's "Hidden Agenda".

Many quotes were pulled from it, and the Liberal campaign included bits and pieces. It is believed that it actually cost the Reform-Conservatives a majority government.

But I've read that speech several times, and what I get from it is arrogance: An arrogance that implies that we are all wrong, but we're too ignorant to even know that we are all wrong. That only he can see the error of our ways.
Now, having given you a compliment, let me also give you an insult. I was asked to speak about Canadian politics. It may not be true, but it's legendary that if you're like all Americans, you know almost nothing except for your own country. Which makes you probably knowledgeable about one more country than most Canadians.

What was the point of that remark? He's speaking to Americans, about Canadians.
First, facts about Canada. Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it. Canadians make no connection between the fact that they are a Northern European welfare state and the fact that we have very low economic growth, a standard of living substantially lower than yours, a massive brain drain of young professionals to your country, and double the unemployment rate of the United States.

In terms of the unemployed, of which we have over a million-and-a-half, don't feel particularly bad for many of these people. They don't feel bad about it themselves, as long as they're receiving generous social assistance and unemployment insurance. (1)

It's almost like an attack ad. Very much the way he acts in Parliament now against his political opponents, only in this case, it was against the Canadian people.

It wasn't a clever speech. There were no great pearls of wisdom. It was flip and if he was actually trying to educate this group on Canadian politics, it would have only created confusion. He talks about 'Whigs' without explaining who they were. States that most Catholics vote Liberal for 'reasons he didn't want to get into.' Why bring it up at all if he wasn't going to qualify it?

We do get a glimpse into his ideology when he refers to women's rights as 'feminist' rights, and "... including some that would just horrify you, putting universal Medicare in our constitution.." What is so horrifying about universal Medicare?

If I were in the audience, I definitely would never have got the impression that this was a man with political aspirations. If he wrote that speech it was grade eight at best.

"...and a whole bunch of fairly non-conservative economic things."

" ... and a whole bunch of other things"

But I think that it helps to define this movement. It has always been about protest and arrogance and ignorance. They adhere to the Old Testament and have a view of
Canada as being in moral decay. They want to return to the "good old days" when women knew their place and there was prayer in school, and a sea of white faces.

In it's seventy-five year history, there have only ever really been five leaders: William Aberhart, Ernest Manning, his son Preston Manning, Stockwell Day and Stephen Harper, and their political views have not progressed but stagnated.

Their arrogance is born of ignorance. And rather than try to raise the level of debate, they want to bring it down to their level. Experts in their field are "elites", well-educated are reduced to "university types", advocates are "fringe-groups".

There is no desire to move
Canada forward only dismantle it and strip it down. Isolate us from our former allies with high-handed foreign policy, and a refusal to co-operate. Base our laws on the Bible and our future on Biblical prophesy.

They have made Canadian politics so toxic that our very democracy is at risk. Secrecy is the order of the day and their media control is alarming.

This is a movement that was founded on anti-Semitism, nurtured on racism, and fuelled by extremism. And every time a party they create is exposed, they simply re-invent themselves, but using the same old worn out parts. Social Credit - Reform -
Alliance - Conservative. The only thing that really changes is the name.

And what will their legacy be? Will we even recognize this country when they're through? Can their damage be repaired?

People who once lived on the fringe, are now in control and they have aligned themselves with the most extreme elements, here and in the
United States. It's frightening really, but it shows what happens when you don't pay attention.

Hopefully, you'll pay attention now.

Chapter One: Bold Moves

CANADIAN JUSTICE IS JUNK- PART III

TRAINING THE TROOPS
or
How The Constabulary Creates A Blue Brother

This is very long: almost three thousand words but that is because this is a very complex subject with many inputs that have to be considered. The creation of a cop takes about 5 years and during that time he is exposed to a carefully planned training program that is designed to wipe out his personality as a member of normal society and fill his mind in “Cop Think”. Read it carefully and stop along the way and wonder how you would cope with the regimen. Also think about what can be done to restore the system because the product it is producing stinks.

The first thing a Canadian citizen should understand is that the Blue Brotherhood is not the creation of our Canadian Cops but is international and applies to Constabularies everywhere. Our Canadian version has become an aberration and exceeds the norm as will be explained later. At this point we have come to the point where there is a knock on your door and there is a Cop, a member of the Blue Brotherhood, who wants to ask some questions. To continue:

You stand in your doorway and you look at this Brother in Blue wanting to talk:

Ask yourself:
1.    Who is this guy?
2.    Where’s he coming from?
3.    What kind of a person am I dealing with?

The answer to those questions was fairly well volunteered by an older Police Officer speaking as a member of the Brotherhood when asked about the effects of a career in law enforcement on officers in general:
“One of the only things that is universal about almost all cops, is the fact that we age too quickly, see too much pain and suffering, lose our trust for almost anyone because EVERYONE lies to the police, and we lose our social grounding. It is very hard to believe that the world is basically good when you spend year after year seeing only the worst parts of it.

That is where it gets really hard, because sometimes we think out friends and families are trying to 'get over' on us, just like the shitbags we deal with at work. That hurts even the strongest relationships. Our ability to see beauty and innocence gets pretty heavily trampled on, and that really hurts when you are raising kids. Thankfully, most police officers learn to live compartmentalized lives: Those who don't die from alcoholism, heart disease, or suicide at an early age.”

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

This personal assessment of the damage to self by a career in law enforcement is supported and borne out by the work of Professor Jerome Skolnick, the currently accepted authority who describes the police working personality: what many people, and police themselves, often describe as the police personality. The working personality is characterized as:
1.    distrustful of outsiders
2.    cynical
3.    conservative (not necessarily politically, but resistant to change)
4.    suspicious
5.    pessimistic
6.    pragmatic
7.    prejudicial
8.    and holding other widely-shared attitudes about and beyond the mainstream view.

What the hell happened here? What: in the course of about ten years on the job, turned the top 2% of the ideal recruit crop into a collection of miserable curmudgeons? What happens in the course of this career to render such psychological damage?

What follows is a vivid portrayal of career in law enforcement that I freely plagiarized from the work of Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith of the Chicago Police Department. She is a nationally recognized authority on training and the working personality and I have simply transformed one of her papers into a wake-up call lecture that should be given to every new class of recruits before their training begins

The Road to Remorse and Regret

Good morning Recruits:

My name is Sgt.  XXX and today I am here to give you an orientation into what the course of your life will be if you do join the Force with the intention of a life time career. The first thing I want you to understand is that your entire life will change in the course of your training and so will your personality and outlook on life. Much of that change will be due to defensive reactions to unpleasant pressures to conform to the system and avoid discipline for failure to do so. Following I am going to chronologically outline what you can expect to encounter in the course of your career and some good advice on how to react and assess each development as it occurs.

Most of us start the academy with a servant’s heart. Remember the old LAPD motto “To Serve and Protect?” That’s all of us, that is supposed to be what cops are all about, but pretty quickly into your law enforcement career, it becomes less about “them” and more about “us.” We separate ourselves from the rest of society, even from our family and friends. But it doesn’t have to be that way, if you learn why this common police pitfall occurs and how to avoid it.

Remember, less than two out of every one hundred police applicants ever become cops, so as soon as you get hired, you start to feel like you’re a member of an elite group. And you are! There are few professions where we are expected to potentially lay down our lives as part of the employment agreement. However, that elitist feeling you have in the academy can be just the beginning of your “us v. them” mentality.

Your first couple of years are consumed with learning the job. You spend a considerable amount of time around veteran officers, trainers, and supervisors trying to learn the profession and earn the trust of your peers. As Dr. Kevin Gilmartin, PhD. talks about in his book Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement, a new officer begins to rely on the friendship and support of other officers, usually to the detriment of their “non-cop” relationships. Because there is so much to do and learn, and so little time to devote to your personal life, new officers find themselves socializing only with their co-workers. Old friendships may begin to fade way, not intentionally, but after all, are any of your “old” friends willing to meet you for a beer at seven o’clock on a Tuesday morning when you get off work? Not likely.

There are no grey areas. The law enforcement officer works in a fact-based world with everything compared to written law. Right and wrong is determined by a standard. They have a set way of going about gathering the proper evidence for the law and can justify their actions because they represent the "good and right side." In the real world, clear rights and wrongs are not as likely to occur. The newspapers are an opinion-based system, the court system is an opinion-based system and, needless to say, relationship decisions and proper parenting techniques are opinion-based systems.

Adjusting from right and wrong, a black-and-white system, to opinion-based systems is very difficult and requires a complete change in mental attitude.
“The average cop will see more human tragedy in the first three years than most people will see in a lifetime” according to Dr. Ellen Kirschman, author of I Love a Cop. As we become a competent veteran officer, we develop a macabre sense of humour and are forced to control our emotions at all times. We view the world as a violent place full of idiots, con artists, and liars. We become sceptical, paranoid, and hyper vigilant, and we look down on those who do not share our cynical and alarmist view of the society. Not only do we cease most of our “pre-cop” friendships, but our family relationships may begin to deteriorate as well. We become distant and dark-spirited, even when we’re at home. We complain that “my family doesn’t understand,” and we may become overly strict with our kids, not wanting them to be exposed to the outside world that we know is violent, dangerous and unpredictable. Eventually, your family may grow weary of your “us v. them” attitude and decide they’d rather be with “them” rather than being a part of “us.”

You need to be in constant emotional control. Law enforcement officers have a job that requires extreme restraint under highly emotional circumstances. They are told when they are extremely excited, they have to act calm. They are told when they are nervous; they have to be in charge. They are taught to be stoic when emotional. They are to interact with the world in a role. The emotional constraint of the role takes tremendous mental energy, much more energy than expressing true emotions. When the energy drain is very strong, it may make the officer more prone to exhaustion outside of work, such as not wanting to participate in social or family life. This energy drain can also create a sense of job and social burnout.

It’s no secret that cops have a 75% divorce rate, a high rate of alcoholism, and we die twice as often by our own hand as we do by felonious assaults. After all, if you go from a fun-loving, idealistic, service-oriented rookie to a dark-hearted, cynical veteran, you’re not going to be much fun to be around, and eventually you won’t like yourself anymore than anyone else does. So don’t let it happen!

Your FTO may know everything there is to know about impaired drivers, but why has he been married and divorced) three times? Your favourite sergeant is a wonderfully supportive mentor to you, but why does she end every shift sitting at the bar of the local gin joint? Sometimes the most qualified cops on your agency are also the least successful when it comes to their personal lives. As delicately as you can, try to find out why. Ask them if they could do anything different, what would it be? And then listen to what they have to say.

This can be tough to do. Your “normal” friends are either going to be “weirded out” by your new profession or they may become distant, intimidated, even hostile about you becoming a cop. However, don’t give up on all of them. Your true friends are going to accept you, for who you are, just make sure to touch base with them and occasionally get together; and when you do socialize with them, don’t spend all your time together telling cop “war stories.” Ask about their job, their life, their problems, concerns, and successes, and then really listen. Don’t make it all about you, even if they try to. In other words, don’t get mired in your own self-importance.

Be proactive about your emotional well being. Make sure that physical activity is part of your regular routine. There are two kinds of stress, “distress” and “eustress”. Develop positive addictions, like running, basketball, hunting, and photography, anything that makes you feel good and is good for you. Also make sure you spend time around good, positive people. Go to church, do volunteer work, coach a kids soccer team, do charity work. Get involved in activities that remind you that not everyone is a drug dealing, child molesting criminal, and that in general, life is pretty good. Remember, you took this job to help the community, not isolate yourself from them. One of the great things about policing in a free society is the tradition of being “of the people,” not “over the people.”

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

We’re Back Where We Started

Unfortunately Canadians are not living in a free society and the Constabulary successfully biased the Access to Information Act of 1985 with a series of exemptions regarding Investigations. The majority of officers have adopted a tradition of being “over the people” and responsible to no one for anything they do, on or off the Job

So here we are with you, in your doorway, facing a cop who wants entry and to talk to you about something.

You stood in your doorway and you looked at this Brother in Blue and asked yourself:
·        Who is this guy?
·        Where’s he coming from?
·        What kind of a person am I dealing with?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

At this point you have answered the first two of your questions:

Who is this guy?

He’s a kid who has been ripped out of normal society and forced into another by the Constabulary. He will robotically obey orders, not question his superiors’ judgement, and he will most certainly report his obedience to those orders in meticulous detail. He will never depart from those details regardless of consequence.

Where does he come from?

He comes from on the job training in how to relate to the public: all civilians are suspect criminals in his mind. He’s been trained to lie and is a skilled interrogator in command of any interview with a civilian suspect. He can present himself as a member of any class or occupation to elicit an admission of some fault and is skilled in the use of leading questions to confuse his victim. Any request for information by a cop is prompted by a desire to establish guilt. He doesn’t care whose and he is fishing for information that can move the subject of his questioning into the suspect category if he even admits a connection to another individual suspected or caught in a criminal activity.

Knowing just this about the officer should be enough to deter any cooperation from a witness but the biggest deterrence of all is his belief that he can violate the law and your rights in his attempts to establish your guilt and he is immune from prosecution by doing so.

That belief combined with the support of his brotherhood is validated by the exemptions of criminal investigation from the normal channels per the Access to Information Act, The Brotherhood has the power to control the whole Justice system, and that will be the subject of my next post

CANADIAN JUSTICE IS JUNK- PART II

THE CANADIAN CONSTABULARY
THE BASTARDS AT FAULT

OR

COPS

THE

Corps Of Prejudiced Sadists

More and more, every day, control of the Law and Order governing the people of Canada is increasingly being usurped by the collective Canadian Police Forces. The average cop has become a personal threat to, and someone to be feared by every individual he confronts. No longer does he Serve and Protect the public: he now serves his masters and Protects his fellow Cops.

The Cop in your face wasn’t born that way: He was born smart; he was probably a good guy until he absorbed the mental and physical brainwashing of his training. He looks decent enough even now. What could have ground and molded him into this hostile enemy at the gate? Who was he and what turned the soul sour? That is a long story but we can we can place the fault directly on the training and regimen of:

THE CANADIAN CONSTABULARY

The Cop Mold Process

Believe it or not, once upon a time all the Cops who are stamping on our civil and legal rights were the good guys of their generation when it came to the NICE Index! They are part of the top 2% of applicants who manage to pass the entrance exam and be accepted into the Force
In order to become a cop an applicant has to pass an entrance examination that is more or less the equivalent of an assessment by three Psychological Tests
1.    California Personality Inventory (CPI),
2.    The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Scales (16P), and
3.    The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)
When used to assess police candidates, analysts developed a
"Typical Cop" profile group with group members found to be:
1.    self-disciplined,
2.    socially bold,
3.    extroverted,
4.    emotionally tough, and
5.    Low in experienced anxiety.
They also ranked significantly higher on scales of:
6.    "Poise and self-assurance,
7.    achievement potential,
8.    intellectual efficiency,
9.    social insight, and
10.                       To be more likely to seek social contact than the control group.”
By any standards this pool of young recruits is an ideal base for any training program and is the cream of the crop. Instead of a positive blossoming to butter the sour cream churned turns rotten. There’s obviously something wrong with the churn: what’s wrong with it?

Constabulary, as I use it, is an organizational structure designed to enforce order in the ranks of a semi-military force. It was developed by the British Army around the time of the Crimean war in the Mid-1800’s and was returned to Britain and created the structure of the Metropolitan Police Force under Sir Robert Peel. Law enforcement officers work in a quasi-military, structured institution. There are mental health concerns associated with working within a "quasi-military structure" and other mental health concerns of working in an "institution."

Military organizations require the sacrifice of the individual for the good of society. The "individual" is not a consideration; the "goal" of the group is paramount. In a military organization, the focus is on punishing the individual if he is not up to standards. It is a de-humanizing process to recognize that you are only valued as a part of a machine.

The “institution' takes the same attitude, only a step further. In an institution, you are locked in a set process and the process is more important many times than, not only the individual, but also the goal. When an officer does a remarkable job of police work, perhaps even saves a life, he can still be reprimanded if he doesn't file the proper paperwork. The paperwork describing an action in many cases is more important to the institution than the action itself. Both the quasi-military nature of police work and the functioning within an institution combine for a mental health situation that is quite undesirable and very stressful. The training academy of the Police Force he is joining is the churn.

This is the recruit’s first introduction to a Constabulary: a Constabulary is a quasi-military, structured institution. Military organizations require the sacrifice of the individual for the good of society. The "individual" is not a consideration; the "goal" of the group is paramount.

In an institution conforming to procedures is paramount and the paperwork describing an action in many cases is more important to the institution than the action itself. No gray areas. The law enforcement officer works in a fact-based world with everything compared to written law. Right and wrong is determined by a standard. They have a set way of going about gathering the proper evidence for the law and can justify their actions because they represent the "good and right”

The first step in this character transformation process is to isolate the individual from all contact with outside society and force him to adjust to his brother police officers for all social contact. ) They are isolated. The wearing of a badge, uniform and gun makes a law officer separate from society. The wearing of a uniform will tend to make any person de-humanize people who are without a uniform. Just wearing a badge or a gun can cause people to act more aggressively.  You are encouraged to feel like you’re a member of an elite group: the top 2%.This is the beginning of inclusion as part of the Blue Brotherhood and police training especially is designed to strip the individual's previous identity and "make" a police officer.

People deal with them differently and treat them differently, even when they are not working. The police uniform, badge and gun are universal symbols of power and authority. When the individual puts on the uniform, he assumes the authority that goes with it. He expects and commands obedience and respect from the public. Donning the uniform and wielding the power of the job contribute to what is known as the "police personality" and the Us versus Them problems that develop from this intensive brainwashing.

After isolation in training, the recruit is further alienated from his prior social circle by being required to work rotating shifts and a posting away from home. Shift work is not normal. The "rotating shift" schedule is very taxing on an officer's life. Our bodies are adjusted on what is called "circadian schedules" which is a repetitive daily cycle. Our bodies like to have a regular eating time, sleeping time, waking time, etc.

An officer doing shift work never gets a chance to stay on a schedule. This upsets his physical and mental balance in life. The changing work schedule also upsets the routine patterns that are needed in healthy marriage and family development. Strong marital and family development is based on rituals, like dinners together, "inside jokes," repeated activities, etc. The rotating shift worker has less chance to develop these rituals and his relationships suffer. This predisposes the officer's family to potential problems ranging from divorces, to children acting-out.

The recruit’s new "at work" world is very negative. He sees the bad part of society and even the stress is different. Cops have a different kind of stress in their jobs, called "burst stress". At any time in the course of a shift there can be a call with an indication of violence. The officer gets an adrenalin rush with the perception of danger and there is the inevitable “fight or flight” reaction. There may be no danger but that knowledge follows the mental and physical arousal of the reaction. Cops have a job that requires extreme restraint under highly emotional circumstances and they require special training to adjust to a completely different world with a whole new set of survival tools.

Almost all cops age too quickly, see too much pain and suffering, lose trust in almost everyone (because EVERYONE lies to the police), and lose their social grounding. In addition to the work there is the pressure to do it right and conform to the institutional rules fof documentation in addition to learning Chapter and verse of a bewildering variety of laws to be enforced. This happens in the first several years of employment and is accompanied by a progressive disillusionment with society that has to be replaced with a new social circle with members who can be trusted.

The Constabulary has this all under control with the assignment of the recruit to a more senior member as a partner on patrol. This is his mentor in survival: both on the job and off but most importantly how to conform to the completely new society he has been thrust into without his consent. He is now a member of the Blue Brotherhood and he now learns the rules and regulations that will determine his long term survival in a hostile environment like the Constabulary he joined.

Within the course of the first two years after his training and indoctrination is complete, the recruit has had enough experience with both Constabulary and the members of the Brotherhood to make a final judgement of his choice of a career as a Law Officer.
To remain is to abandon all his previous life and connection to Canadian Society and join his new found officer friends in a society that will protect him and provide guidance for a lifetime career. It is a leap into the “Us” and “Them” mentality and with the support of the Brotherhood there is no deterrent for any violation of the law that he might perform in the course of his duties: Job security above all else.

The Police Officer knocking on your door right now has made the decision to remain a Police Officer and join his new Society- the Blue Brotherhood. As a career decision that is probably a wise choice but by doing so he swears an oath to obey the rules of the Society in exchange for his comrades’ support if he makes a mistake in the course of his duties, or even in his off hours. Unfortunately the rules of the Brotherhood have expanded to cover not only the Arbitrary Discipline rendered by the Constabulary they work for, but have been perverted to avoid any responsibility for ignoring and violating the accepted laws of Canadian Society.

That is the subject of my next post in this series:
